UCSF Real Estate Transitions and New Leadership

Dear Financial & Administrative Services (FAS) Community,

Recruitment for the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor of Real Estate/Vice President UCSF Health has concluded and we are thrilled to announce that our top candidate Brian Newman has accepted the position.  Brian is currently the Vice President of Campus Development at Oregon Health and Science University. You can learn more about Brian in the official transition announcement below, and we are working on a broader announcement to introduce him to campus. He’ll officially begin his new position on Monday, August 6.

As we celebrate this exciting time for UCSF Real Estate, I also want to acknowledge those who have paved the way for us to get here.  Thank you to the entire UCSF Real Estate community for their resilience and professionalism throughout these challenging months of transition. And thank you to Robert Stickney for his leadership and contributions to FAS and UCSF. He’s successfully navigated sensitive transitions and critical construction projects, all while juggling his commute between California and Louisiana. Thank you, Robert, for your service.

In gratitude,

Paul Jenny

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that UCSF Real Estate (formerly Real Estate, Planning & Capital Programs) will join with UCSF Health Design and Construction to form an integrated unit led by a newly created leadership position. This transition will enable us to better align development, planning, design, construction, and management of all space across UCSF.

Recruitment has concluded, and we are thrilled to announce that our top candidate Brian Newman has accepted the position as Senior Associate Vice Chancellor of Real Estate/Vice President UCSF Health. Brian is currently the Vice President of Campus Development at Oregon Health and Science University where he has overseen an ambitious expansion of OHSU to a new riverfront campus with over two million square feet of clinical, academic and research facilities completed or under construction.  Brian’s current role includes executive oversight of all campus planning, space planning, real estate, design and construction activities for both the university and health system so he is well prepared for the transition to UCSF.  Prior to joining OHSU Brian spent 15 years as a planning consultant and elected official working on land use and transportation projects in the Portland metro area. He has a master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley.

Brian will oversee all campus real estate, planning, and capital construction activities, as well as UCSF Health-Major Capital Projects and the Design & Construction Division of UCSF Health Facilities & Support Services.  He will begin in early August, and will report to both of us. The rest of UCSF Health Facilities & Support Services will continue to report directly to UCSF Health Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Sheila Antrum.

This change comes at an exciting time as we have significant projects under construction at Mission Bay and have started a long-term planning process for renewing Parnassus Heights, including building the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights.

Uniting the management of our real estate services into one UCSF unit will enable us to leverage our space more thoughtfully and efficiently. Looking across our real estate as one UCSF also will provide a more cohesive approach to designing and building facilities in ways that make the most sense for our staff, patients and visitors.

While the name change is effective immediately, integration of our two real estate units into UCSF Real Estate will begin once Brian begins his new role.

Sincerely,

Mark R. Laret
