Cider and Sustainability: Zero Waste Heroes
The holidays present many opportunities to socialize, celebrate...and generate waste. At one of the FAS holiday parties last December, more than ten gallons of delicious apple cider from Marla Bakery were left over. Isabel and Rowena teamed up with a few other FAS staff to save the cider, reducing waste and sharing the festive holiday treat with everyone in the building.

As people with a passion for sustainability, we hate wasting food. We are always keeping an eye out for ways we can reduce waste. Every effort helps us meet our zero-waste goal. UCSF Sustainability had already loaned some beverage dispensers for the holiday party. Having the dispensers in-house allows us to serve beverages in bulk at events and avoid the plastic waste of individual servings. It took a lot of teamwork–ten gallons of cider transferred one pitcher at a time. We left some on the counter so people can enjoy it warm and refrigerated several gallons for those who prefer it cold. Everyone loved it, and later that evening, the custodial crew could also benefit from the festivities!
