Gloria's Best Day at Work
At the recent UCSF Staff Engagement Town Hall on July 11, participants were encouraged to think about their “Best Day at Work.” We wanted to know about Gloria's best day at work.
Tell us about your "best day at work"
Good beginnings
A great day begins with a good night before––a good workout, a good night’s sleep, staying hydrated. The best morning is when I get out the door with a little time to spare, and my boyfriend helps me by getting my coffee and breakfast.
Having tools to do my job
I start my work shift with a morning briefing, learning about what might be impacting us at Mission Bay that day. Then I’m energized and ready when I head to my post at Smith Cardiovascular Research Building in Mission Bay.
Belonging
I love the people in my building, and I know most of them! I’m always curious about their work in the cardiovascular health field. You might be surprised how much I learn about cardiovascular issues by just being around the clinicians and researchers. It's fascinating work. There's a great mix of our UCSF community in the building. In addition to the clinicians and researchers, I also see students, volunteers, administrators, and the general public. It feels like family here because the nurses, doctors, and staff in the building include me in their celebrations and gatherings. It’s a good feeling to be part of their day.
Pride and respect
I’m on the ground floor of what’s happening. The safety of the building is important to me. My duty is to be alert and aware, to have a “discerning spirit"––to see things before or as they happen––and look for anyone who seems out of place. How you talk to people matters. The way I speak to people garners respect; it’s a key skill in my field. Now if it was only this easy at home (haha)!
