Vicki's Unexpected Benefits of Biking

Assistant Director for Customer Experience Vicki Sundstrom joined UCSF six months ago in a newly created position that includes department communications, managing the customer service team and promoting alternative commute options. “Customer experience is about designing and planning the users’ experience along their journey as they interact with your business,” says Vicki. “For example, an airport traveler may begin at home looking up information on a website, drive to the airport, traverse the airport and board their flight. What does the traveler need to do to be successful and how are those needs met?” Vicki talks with us about May’s Bike Month, Bike to Work Day and her current focus of alternative transportation.

Tell us about what’s happening in May for bike month.

I’ve been focused on alternative commutes, and biking is just one of many options. May is Bike Month and the annual Bay Area Bike to Work Day happens on Thursday, May 18. Bike to Work Day has been around for many years and brings awareness to bicycling as a mode of commuting. Bicycling is a clean and sustainable solution. More than 100,000 people Bay Area-wide ride their bikes for Bike to Work Day. Not everyone is able to bike to work and that’s where Bike Month (also known as Bike to Wherever Month) comes into the picture, to bring awareness to cycling in general, not just biking to work. I asked our UCSF bike community to share an unexpected benefit of biking. Read their responses below.

I hope everyone will join in – share your rides with us on #UCSFLife. Come on by and say hello; find full event details online and download the Zoom background.

FAVORITE COOKIE JAR TREAT

Russian tea cakes, rebranded as Vandana’s Ladduby her grandmother. "I moved to the United States from India when I was 16. The first cookies I learned to bake were Russian tea cakes, which my Grandma rebranded as “Vandana’s Laddu” – Vandana is my Indian name and laddu, an Indian treat

Vicki asked the UCSF bike community: "What is an unexpected benefit of biking?" Here's what they said:

A new relationship with the San Francisco waterfront. I ride along the Embarcadero and every day is different: fog, sunshine, sunsets, ships, pelicans, dog walkers, runners.

Cycling has been a wonderful stress reliever for me and it helps maintain my work-life balance. I’ve met so many friends and some who work at UCSF that I would have never met.

UCSF Staff Resource Days Return May 8-12

UCSF Staff Resource Days return May 8-12 and will include an in-person component on Thursday, May 11 for the first time in three years. Staff are invited to the Mission Bay campus to meet and connect with representatives from organizations, committees, and resources for staff in a social, accessible outdoor environment. Virtual events will also be held.

First Impressions Contest Deadline Extended to May 5

The deadline to put forward your UCSF common space for refurbishment in this year's Facilities Services First Impressions Contest has been extended to Friday, May 5. That means you still have time to submit that tired restroom, dated break room or drabby building entrance! In its first four years, the First Impressions Contest has transformed 45 campus eyesores into inviting spaces that enrich the working environment at UCSF.
