We've Got Heart
FAS is fortunate to have passionate staff who dedicate their personal time to worthy causes, often representing UCSF. On Friday, September 24, members of HR’s Talent Acquisition group will join 11 other UCSF teams in the American Heart Association’s Bay Area Heart Walk, coming together with a goal of raising $50k to put toward saving children with heart defects, training thousands in CPR and funding groundbreaking brain and heart research. Participating in the walk has been an HR tradition for at least ten years. The walk typically starts at Mission Bay, but this year the event will be virtual, with participants choosing their own path. A few members of HR’s aptly named team “We’ve Got Talent” shared their inspiration for getting involved.

"My mom struggles with diabetes. She used to work in a pharmacy, yet she hasn’t been working for the last two years. I am walking so I can help with research to help my mom live a long, healthy life. My daughter is 14. I want to start early with her to help prevent a family cycle. I try to help my daughter understand what my mom is going through. We’ll cook healthy things for mom and explain the importance of taking care of yourself. My family is from the South. We eat all kinds of things that aren’t healthy. I teach my daughter these are “special occasion” foods. Staying active is also important for your heart. When I started doing the heart walk, I also started sharing a lot of quotes on Facebook for family and friends about how it’s important to care for others and yourself."

"I got involved because I have family members with diabetes and hypertension. I always have my eyes on improving health, but I know the more fun it is, the more I will do it. I appreciate that our fundraising benefits research, especially the technology aspect. My dad has hypertension. Now he has technology that sends his medical information directly to his doctor. They can see his data and get him help right away if his numbers spike. I appreciate how far technology has come. My mom’s mother died of a heart attack. I wonder how this just-in-time technology may have saved her."

"This walk is aligned with the mission of UCSF. We have innovative health care and health care delivery, and so do our partners like the American Heart Association. I participated because I can build awareness and spread the word about this important cause. It’s very personal for me this year. My mother passed away a few years ago from complications brought on by a stroke and a preexisting heart condition. It’s not just about patients, it’s about their families too. The association supports the community not only through illness but also through loss."
