True North 2023 results and reflections

Dear Financial and Administrative Services (FAS) Community,

I wanted to share our FAS True North FY23 results and reflect on our progress. True North is our compass, providing direction on how we advance UCSF’s mission and values.

Recognizing that FAS teams were already working on high-priority projects and goals, this year we focused our organization-wide goals on the few, most essential priorities that we can all contribute to, with concentrated efforts and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and anti-racism.

TOPLINE RESULTS

We surpassed our belonging and value improvement goals. We also increased our overall diverse spend percentage even though we didn’t reach the M2 target. See the full report (PDF).

  • Metric 1 (M1): The overall FAS score on the Belonging Index increased by a statistically significant 0.04 percentage points.
  • Metric 2 (M2): While only 3 of 9 (33%) of FAS departments increased their percentage spend with diverse suppliers, those 3 units have a high volume of spending. As a result, FAS did increase the overall diverse spend from 18.6% in FY22 to 20.5% in FY23.
  • Metric 3 (M3): FAS well surpassed the Value Improvement goal of 25% of $12.8M in Cumulative Net Value by achieving 57%.

WHAT'S NEXT

We are recruiting a new Executive Director of Diversity and Inclusion reporting to me. Thanks to the dedication of so many FAS teams, we have already seen incredible progress across the organization in this area. I’m excited to see how much further we can progress under this new leader.

We will continue to focus on continuous improvement through the Continuous Improvement Committee and amplify the commitment that already exists within FAS.

The enterprise is following our success for increased belonging. But we cannot rest on our laurels. How do we continue to improve the workplace for everyone? How can we keep up momentum to surpass our goals?

Thank you for your extraordinary contributions.
