Beto Makes It Work

Lead Custodian Adalberto “Beto” Garcia is one of the many FAS staff who have helped set up the new FAS Work Hub spaces, drop-in individual and team workspaces at 654 Minnesota, the Mission Center Building and the FAS Hotel space in the Millberry Union at Parnassus Heights. “The first time I met Beto, he immediately asked how he could help,” says project lead and Director of FAS Administrative Services Shauna Strong. “He’s been a wonderful partner helping us get empty FAS administrative spaces cleaned up and ready to repurpose for UCSF’s critical space needs.”

With versatile workspaces for teams and individuals, the FAS Work Hubs provide space for FAS staff to work and collaborate onsite and give back unused space to the Chancellor, a key goal of SVC Gore. Beto has worked at UCSF for 19 years. He and his crew of 14 cover a lot of space at UCSF – MCB, 654 Minnesota, Hunter’s Point, Buchanan Dental Clinic just to name a few—giving them a unique view into what happens in our buildings. We talked with him about work and life.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I like to help people and stay busy. Helping my coworkers is the best part of my job.

What have you noticed about our workspaces since COVID?

It feels like a lot of empty space. Before COVID it was so busy in the administrative buildings. Labs and clinical areas like the Buchanan Dental Clinic are still busy, but since COVID many office spaces are sitting empty and unused.

Do you have a hidden talent?

For the past year, I’ve been training for American Ninja Warrior (an American sports entertainment reality show based on the Japanese television reality show Sasuke where elite athletes compete in the world's most difficult obstacle courses) a few nights a week at Traverse Fitness in Richmond. We’ll see, maybe I’ll try out someday.

But wait there's more...
