Facilities Service Adjustments in Response to Budget Constraints
In response to current budget realities, we must adjust service levels and operating model to align with reduced financial resources.
Dear UCSF Community,
As we navigate a period of significant financial uncertainty, UCSF must take proactive steps to ensure the continued sustainability of our operations and protect our core mission areas: teaching, research, and patient care. Campus Life Services (CLS) Facilities Services, as part of Financial and Administrative Services, has consistently worked to deliver high-quality support services with efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness. In response to current budget realities, we must now adjust our service levels and operating model to align with our reduced financial resources.
These campus-centered changes (not UCSF Health) were developed thoughtfully to preserve essential functions such as life-safety capabilities and compliance while implementing targeted reductions and efficiencies in support areas.
The adjustments include:
- Custodial Services: Cleaning schedules will be reduced in lower-traffic areas, such as hallways, stairwells, and breakrooms. Daily service in clinical spaces, laboratories, and high-use areas, such as certain restrooms, will remain in place.
- Facilities Management: Each Facilities Manager will oversee a larger building portfolio, which may lead to longer response times for non-urgent requests and fewer routine walkthroughs. We will continue to prioritize life safety, compliance, and operational continuity.
- Energy Management: Temperature settings in many buildings will shift slightly to a wider, but still comfortable range (68-75 degrees F), and ventilation start times will be adjusted. There will be no major temperature changes in critical areas.
- New Financial Model: Beginning July 1, 2025, we will eliminate internal recharges for standard services. This will simplify budgeting for departments and streamline our own operations.
- Technology Advancements: We are consolidating platforms, implementing automation, and expanding the “See It, Fix It” reporting tool across our campus facilities. These improvements will allow us to respond more quickly to building-related needs.
What Can You Do?
Please report maintenance and cleanliness issues when you see them. We need the support of the entire UCSF community.
Our 24/7 call center can be reached at (415) 476-2021, or by email: [email protected].
We recognize that any reduction in service, however measured, may be felt by members of our community. Our teams are committed to supporting this transition with clear communication, practical tools, and a continued focus on the UCSF mission areas.
Thank each of you – faculty, staff, learners, and partners – for your understanding, flexibility, and continued engagement.
Sincerely,
