SVC STAR Awards 2022

Inspiration and achievement come from all levels of our organization. With great PRIDE, every year we honor the three 2022 Senior Vice Chancellor STAR Awardees for their contributions to the FAS True North and the Chancellor’s Goals, and for enhancing our culture by demonstrating PRIDE Values in their daily interactions. In support of the UCSF mission, awardees embrace their roles to create an environment where people can do their best–to help staff learn and grow, focus on continuous improvement and be good stewards of our resources.

Kathleen Yumul

Kathleen Yumul, Wellness Manager
Campus Life Services - Wellness & Community

Shortly after the start of the pandemic, the need to prioritize and address human wellbeing became obvious – stress levels were elevated; anxiety, emotional pain, and exhaustion levels manifested into mental health crises for many.  Kathleen Yumul, Wellness Program Manager from Campus Life Services Wellness and Community, was motivated to address this problem. A long-term advocate of holistic wellness and human wellbeing, the pandemic crisis flung open doors for her to inspire others to embrace the value of wellness. Kathleen has gone above and beyond building and expanding programs, nurturing partnerships, refining educational tools, and heightening awareness of resources to benefit the UCSF community.  A few of her many efforts include receiving full recognition status from the Centers for Disease Control for their diabetes prevention program, partnering to incorporate “Wellness Corner” into Pulse, creating a Wellness Champion program and launching an enterprise-wide Wellbeing Committee with Dan Lowenstein. Kathleen symbolizes excellence, receiving accolades from a broad spectrum of the UCSF community - staff and faculty members to senior leaders, not only because she is passionate about the work and the wellness of Our People, but because her authentic self and soul shines in the pursuit of a culture of wellness for everyone at UCSF.

From the selection committee:

“During a time of great stress for employees, Kathleen's effort to promote wellness across the campus is very compelling.”

Sarah Fidelibus PMO

Sarah Fidelibus, Program Manager
Program Management Office (PMO)

A successful project manager creates a structure and process to harness the best ideas from across the organization and make them happen. More than two years ago, PMO Program Manager Sarah Fidelibus began supporting transformational changes to how UCSF and FAS approach space, beginning with her facilitating the enterprise-wide Administrative Space Task Force on behalf of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and carrying through to the FAS Telework and Workspace Program (TWP). Her tireless efforts leveraged the forward-thinking work of taskforces and all FAS departments and levels in the organization, including Executive sponsors, a Leadership Group of functional experts, department change champions, the FAS Executive Team, staff focus groups and an outside vendor, along with frequently engaging with the Chancellor’s Cabinet in the absence of an SVC. Collectively, the TWP project impacted Our People True North pillar by supporting ongoing telework for more than half of our staff whose work can be done from home some or all of the time, and the Resource Management and Stewardship pillar by reaching agreement on plans to reduce FAS’s administrative footprint by 40-60% to reflect our new work model and make space for higher-priority needs. Already, FAS space is being repurposed for the Nursing Excellence Program and other groups have consolidated and co-located to support flexible work options. There is more to do but arriving at consensus to move forward with our ambitious work environment changes is an exceptional outcome that serves as a foundation for other entities in UCSF who have applauded our innovative progress

From the selection committee:

“…when the telework project started, UCSF had no clue what to expect or what to do for the future of working at UCSF…we are creating the path.”

Jeffrey Jang , Solution Center Supervisor

UCSF Finance, Controller's Office

When asked to help lead and organize members of management in the Controller’s Office and Human Resources to help document business requirements for a UCSF specific UCPath dashboard, Controller’s Office Solution Center Supervisor Jeff Jang seized the opportunity to not only provide requirements documentation, but also stepping up to lead an Innovative project – the development of a digital dashboard.  Jeff answers questions from employees and Campus departments related to UCPath. Being familiar with the Customer Experiences of UCSF users, Jeff could immediately see the benefit of creating a dashboard for leadership. He took his own initiative to meet with an experienced system project manager to learn more about the overall project management process and took what we learned to write a project charter. His extraordinary work will allows us to present metrics related to UCPath to various senior leaders at UCSF, both centrally and in Campus departments, providing context and insight into what UCPath users at our location are experiencing and provide the data needed to help drive change related to our Resource Management and Stewardship.  This is an example of extraordinary work that will benefit FAS and our entire UCSF organization.

From the selection committee:

“He went outside the scope of his job to add value on a high-touch customer issue, a stellar example of using digital transformation to improve the customer experience.”
