Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to share an update about Campus Life Services leadership. After a national search started last fall, Jon Giacomi has been selected as the new Associate Vice Chancellor of CLS, effective May 1, 2023.

Jon has been a valued UC team member for over three decades, currently serving as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Facilities Services in CLS where he leads a team of 425 and oversees a $120M budget. He has served in multiple roles of progressive responsibility, focused on the culture of the department, delivering consistent results to the enterprise, proactively building facilities leadership depth, and consistently stepping up in emergencies during the pandemic, as well as day-to-day mission disruptions. Jon is an industry leader and during this tenure, Facilities Services has won three national Innovative & Effective Practice Awards. Jon received the UCSF Chancellor Award for Exceptional University Management in 2013.

Campus Life Services is a division within Finance and Administrative Services (FAS) with over 800 employees in Housing, Transportation, Facilities, Sustainability, Family Services, Documents and Media, Retail, Conference and Events, Community Events, Fitness and Recreation, Marketing by CLS, as well as training and administrative units that support the division.

Over his significant time at UCSF, Jon has made meaningful contributions to UCSF as well as the UC system. Under his leadership Facilities Services has achieved its highest customer service, employee engagement, and overall satisfaction scores. In November 2020, he was tapped to create the inaugural FAS Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility and Anti-Racism (DEIA-AR) Steering Committee. With his leadership, the committee introduced a speaker series, set up new DEIA-AR goals and metrics for FAS, and led the “How is Racism Operating Here?” FAS workshop in September 2022. In this workshop, featuring guest speaker and author Dante King, FAS developed 17 anti-racism and inclusion actions. As part of these actions, Jon proposed a pilot program that allowed job applicants in campus custodial services and landscaping/grounds to interview in their preferred language. From November 2021 until August 2022, Jon was asked to work on a special assignment in labor relations at the University of California Office of the President, specifically on the implementation of systemwide contracting out/in policy and CA Senate Bill 820 (disallows contracting out in State-funded facilities) implementation. Jon was able to help pull all UC locations together into a common strategy and approach to these complex issues.

Prior to joining UCSF, Jon worked at the University of California Office of the President and at University of California, Berkeley. He held various positions in Athletics & Recreational Sports and Facilities Administration. Notable assignments at the Office of the President included opening the University of California Washington Center in Washington, D.C. during the 9/11 national crisis and serving as the inaugural manager of space allocation where he consolidated multiple leases to create an ongoing $2M operating expense savings.

We are fortunate to have outstanding leadership within Facilities and Campus Life Services to help ensure a smooth transition. I want to thank CLS staff for their patience and fortitude during the recruitment period and for the selection committee, chaired by Angela Lucien. I'm also grateful to Becky Daro, who has graciously served in the interim role since May 2022. Becky has leveraged her thoughtful approach to campus culture as well as her ability to dive deep into the impacts of the pandemic on the CLS business models and enhance partnerships built over a decade at UCSF. I look forward to continuing to partner with her as she returns to the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor.

A national search will begin in May to find Jon’s successor in Facilities Services. He has agreed to continue to oversee Facilities Services until his replacement is hired.

Please join me in congratulating Jon.
