Dear UCSF Community,
The success of UCSF’s mission across patient care, research, and education has enabled us to serve more people and expand our work to advance health. This growth, however, has also increased pressure on our limited parking availability at Parnassus Heights and Mission Bay.
Over the next few months, we will implement changes to increase parking for our patients so they can access our care, allocate on-site parking to employees through a new permit system, and expand transit options and other alternatives. These updates reflect the realities of San Francisco’s constrained parking environment and our commitment to balancing patient care and employee needs.
Daily Parking Changes & Dedicated Patient Parking
Many of our patients and visitors have shared that they struggle to find parking and get to their appointments on time. To help address this, UCSF will phase out the temporary discounted daily parking rates introduced during the pandemic. The discounted daily rate will end at Parnassus Heights on June 1, 2025, and at Mission Bay on August 1, 2025.
Additionally, we want to remind the UCSF community that the Millberry Union Garage at Parnassus Heights is reserved only for patients and visitors to ensure they have reliable access to care.
New Parking Permit System
To manage the limited on-site parking more effectively, we are introducing a new parking permit system at Parnassus Heights for the ACC Garage on June 1, 2025. We will follow up with a Mission Bay permit system in the coming months.
Permits will be allocated to UCSF Health; the schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy; the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Office; and the Office of the Chancellor. The leadership of these units will allocate permits using new guidelines, prioritizing those whose roles require moving between worksites on unpredictable schedules, particularly for life safety and patient care. Control point leaders will provide more details on allocation soon.
To accommodate different workforce needs, additional permits will be available for night and weekend shifts, and we remain committed to ensuring access for those in our community with physical disabilities. You can learn more at the UCSF Transportation website.
Holders of Parnassus Heights permits can use those permits at other UCSF parking locations. However, other UCSF permits cannot be used at Parnassus Heights.
Starting on June 1, those who do not have a permit will not be able to park on-site at Parnassus Heights. We ask that everyone utilize the park-and-ride lots or other transit options described below.
Affordable Park-and-Ride Lots
To further ease parking constraints, we are expanding our park-and-ride options at a significantly lower cost—about one-third the price of a monthly parking permit.
There are three park-and-ride locations, including the Japan Center Garage, where you can park and get transportation between the site and Parnassus Heights. Plans are underway to expand these park-and-ride options for our community, and shuttle service will operate from the garages to our UCSF locations.
We will share more information about these and other locations in the coming months.
Enhanced Transit Options
As we work on solutions for UCSF’s future growth, we will continue to support transit options, including public transportation. We are exploring shuttle options for our team members who reside outside of San Francisco and changes to our shuttle routes to ensure they are efficient for our community.
UCSF is committed to helping you navigate these changes as we work to expand your parking and transit options. You can find resources on the UCSF Transportation page, and we will continue to provide the Commute Concierge Consultations, informational emails, and upcoming transportation information sessions to support your transit planning.
If you have questions or suggestions, please contact us at [email protected]. If you would like the Transportation team to visit one of your staff meetings or town halls to answer questions, please contact [email protected].
Thank you for your partnership as we make these necessary changes. By working together, we will continue to provide the best possible service to our patients while supporting UCSF’s ongoing growth.
Sincerely,
Erin S. Gore
