UCSF Chief Information Officer Joe Bengfort

Dear Colleagues:

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Joe Bengfort to the position of UCSF Chief Information Officer (CIO), a critical position that is charged with strengthening the delivery of high-quality IT services across the UCSF Campus and Medical Center. His appointment as CIO is effective immediately.

In his new role, Joe will report to Senior Vice Chancellor—Finance and Administration John Plotts and Medical Center Chief Operating Officer Ken Jones as well as coordinating closely with Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Jeff Bluestone on strategy and priorities, particularly as they relate to research and education.

The creation of a campuswide CIO position is a direct outgrowth of the Operational Excellence initiative and is linked to supporting our multiple missions of patient care, research and teaching. This model is designed to deliver excellent, consistent and cost-effective IT services to our faculty and staff and to increase collaboration and cooperation in meeting the IT needs of the institution at large.

In the coming months, Joe will continue to integrate certain IT functions across the UCSF enterprise while working closely with specialized departmental IT teams that remain decentralized. The goals are to achieve greater collaboration and sharing of data across UCSF; to better position UCSF to meet the increasing demand for IT, data and analytical services; and to reshape our investment in IT to meet the evolving needs of our core missions.

Joe is an experienced executive with a proven track record for leading strategic transitions within healthcare and IT services organizations. He has served as the Medical Center CIO for the past two years and has over 25 years of leadership experience in the IT field.

Please join us in acknowledging Joe’s accomplishments and thanking him for assuming this critical new function.

Sincerely,

John Plotts
