UCSF Gender Inclusive Restroom Proposal - Review and Comment Period Open Now

Dear FAS Community,

UCSF is committed to identifying gender inclusive restrooms for all, to ensure safety and comfort to our campus and UCSF Health community.  I am pleased that Facilities Services is leading an effort to ensure that UCSF has sufficient coverage of Gender Inclusive restrooms (GIRR) across our campus locations.

You have an opportunity to share your feedback during a review and comment period that will end on May 6, 2019.

Facilities Services is leading an effort to ensure that UCSF has gender inclusive restrooms (GIRR) spread across our campus locations. Gender inclusive restrooms provide privacy for many constituencies – the transgender population, people providing elder care to a patient or visitor, people assisting children, people administering insulin, and many others.

We have finished mapping of all current gender inclusive restrooms (GIRR) for both the campus and the health system. The attached map indicates which UCSF buildings contain gender inclusive restrooms, GIRR projects in progress, and our preliminary recommendations to add GIRR restrooms. At this time, we are holding a 60-day review and comment period on this proposal to see if the UCSF community has any suggestions or questions. We encourage you to share this proposal with student, faculty, and staff groups in your area. I am also available to speak to any constituent group that you deem appropriate. The review and comment period will end on May 6, 2019.

After completing the survey of restrooms earlier this year, we analyzed the results and have the following observations and recommendations. For this effort, we concentrated on the most high traffic building locations and found that 8 out of 15 high traffic buildings across the campus do not contain gender inclusive restrooms. Since these areas are mainly used by students, faculty, staff and visitors, adding gender inclusive restrooms will serve as an important step to foster inclusivity and meet the goal of having GIRRs that are easily accessed across our campus. As such, we propose to add gender inclusive restrooms to the following eight buildings across the campus:

1.       Parnassus Heights Kalmanovitz Library

2.       Parnassus Heights School of Nursing (temporary GIRR in place now, but requires funding to make permanent)

3.       Parnassus Heights Health Sciences Buildings (proposed in HSIR to serve both HSE and HSW)

4.       Mission Bay Sandler Neurosciences

5.       Mission Bay Rock Hall

6.       Mission Bay Byers Hall

7.       Mission Center Building

8.       Mount Zion Cancer Research Building

It is important to note that GIRRs are currently being designed and constructed for Millberry Union and the Clinical Sciences Building!
